No family is ever fully prepared for the journey from assisted living to memory care. In this heartfelt interview, Lee shares his experience navigating that change, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing his mother is safe, supported and truly cared for at Brookstone Terrace of Greensboro.
Honest from day one
When Lee began researching communities for his mom, he made a lot of phone calls. What stood out was honesty. When he asked for something the community could not offer, the team told him so, and offered to help with anything else he needed. After looking around, he realized this was the best place for her. His mom, who had been married for 62 years, was part of the process of choosing her new home.
A gentle transition to memory care
When the team reached out to suggest it might be time to revisit her care and consider memory care, Lee appreciated that some of the same staff members who had cared for his mom in assisted living were there in memory care too. She had friendly faces from day one.
Lee lives in Georgia, and he never imagined that arrangement could work. But each time he visits, his mom is a little more comfortable. She tells people this is where she lives and that it is her home.
“Regardless of all the beautification and improvements, the reason my mom’s still here, 100%, is the staff.”

“It’s not just a job”
Lee says the people genuinely care. You can see it in the way they treat residents, who are more or less their family. He has also noticed physical and staffing improvements, and appreciates having a dedicated director for the building who oversees care and communicates with families.
Lee’s advice for families
Go easy on yourself
There is no single right way through this. Do not be so hard on yourself.
Look at the care
How residents are treated matters more than how shiny a building is.
Find people in your corner
Look for a team that will advocate for your loved one.
Keep your humor
Sometimes you just have to laugh to get through it.
