Choosing a community for someone you love is one of the hardest decisions a family can make. In this heartfelt interview, Kathy shares how Brookstone Terrace of Woodruff has cared for her husband of 53 years, and how the community has supported her, too.
“He has realized this is home”
When asked what changes she has seen in her husband’s mood and comfort, Kathy’s answer is simple: he has realized this is home. He is comfortable, he interacts with other people and he seems happy, which she says makes her feel so much better. To the residents and staff, he has become “Papa” to everyone, and the community recently celebrated his 80th birthday.
Support for the whole family
Kathy says the help she has received has been as meaningful as the care her husband receives. There is always someone to talk to, someone to bounce things off of, and the reassurance that he has everything he needs. When the transition happened suddenly, the team explained what to expect, answered every question right away and confirmed that she had made the right choice.
“If I had a loved one that needed a place and needed the help, this would be it. I would choose this place over and over and over.”

Her advice to other families

Her advice to families who are where she once was: it is hard, and it may feel impossible, but look closely at the residents and the staff. Are the residents happy and well cared for? Is the staff happy? That, she says, is what really matters, not oil paintings on the walls.
