What happens when you truly love what you do? Amanda, our Activity Director, and Murlene, our Memory Care Activity Director, sit down for a genuine conversation about their experiences at Brookstone Terrace of Greensboro and what makes caring for residents so meaningful.
The moment Amanda knew
Amanda remembers exactly when she knew Murlene belonged on her team. A favorite musician was playing in the lobby, and residents were seated, tapping their toes. Then Murlene came in, in Amanda’s words, like a whole hurricane: dancing, singing and calling residents by name to join in. Before long, everyone was on their feet, singing and laughing. That was the moment Amanda decided she wanted Murlene as her counterpart.
Murlene’s favorite things
Coming up on nearly a year with the community, Murlene says it is hard to pick a favorite. She loves the outings, and she loves whatever her residents love, bingo included. She considers herself a “residential employee,” someone who steps into residents’ space with them and gently brings them back into the fun when they need it.
“Ain’t no fun if you can’t have none.”
Murlene, Memory Care Activity Director
Making memory care feel like life, not an appointment
Both women talk about the balance of supporting residents’ independence, mobility and cognition while keeping it fun. As Amanda explains, activities should not feel like a doctor’s appointment. They are the things residents enjoy and choose for themselves, which takes flexibility because everyone is different.
Murlene also speaks to families. Adjusting to memory care can be hard, and she sees her role as being a bright spot for residents and their loved ones, a reminder that there is always joy to be found and that their best experiences are not behind them. Some families even tell her that their dad’s social calendar is busier than theirs.
Many hats
Therapist, cruise director, chef, entertainer and personal trainer, sometimes all in one day.
Judgment-free
Residents and visitors are welcomed as family the moment they walk in.
Music and movement
Live music, dancing and parties bring everyone together.
Service at heart
As Murlene says, if you do not have service in your heart, this work is not for you.
Why it is all worth it
For Amanda and Murlene, the reward is simple: a resident saying thank you for an activity or a snack, or a family member saying how much they appreciate them. As Murlene puts it, every bead of sweat and every stubbed toe is worth it.
