At Brookstone Terrace of Simpsonville, the activity calendar is never just a list of events. For Activity Director Kathleen, it is a way to build friendships, bring residents together and give everyone something to look forward to. In this video, she shares what she loves about her job and why families can feel confident their loved ones are having a great time.
Watching friendships grow
Kathleen says the most rewarding part of her work is seeing what happens beyond the activities themselves. In her words, “One of my favorite things about this job is how fulfilling it is working with the residents.”
She loves watching residents walk over to one another, start talking and become best friends. Over time, she says, they form almost a familial bond while they are here. That sense of belonging is exactly what we hope every resident finds at Brookstone Terrace.
She understands the family side, too
Kathleen’s care for families comes from personal experience. She once stepped away from work for six months to help her grandma and grandpa move into assisted living, so she knows firsthand that the transition can be hard on the whole family.
That is why she makes a point of reaching out to families. She lets them know their loved one is doing great, having a good time and always happy to see them, and that they are enjoying their days even when family cannot be there. Sometimes a visiting son or daughter heads to their mom’s room only to discover, as Kathleen puts it, “Oh no, they’re at activities again.” She calls that the best kind of problem.
“Our direct focus in activities is making sure that these residents are having a great day.”

Something new every day
Bingo is a resident favorite, and Kathleen promises it is not going anywhere. Still, she believes everyone needs variety so the days never feel monotonous. Residents like to be challenged, so she keeps things fresh and always has something new on the calendar.

Game show days
Some days it is Family Feud, and Kathleen happily plays host. As she says, “I’m Steve Harvey.”
Laughs and karaoke
Other days she is cracking jokes or leading residents through a round of karaoke.
Trivia and outings
A trivia game or a bus outing can turn a sleepy afternoon around. Residents tell her they do not need a nap; they want to get down to activities and have some fun.
Weekly group exercise
Every Wednesday, our therapy team leads a group exercise class open to all residents, and Kathleen says she has seen them work wonders.
Care that feels like family
Kathleen sums up her role simply: residents can enjoy their day because they know the team is keeping an eye on them. “We’re taking care of them, and if something happens, we’re going to be there when they need us.”
That balance of fun, friendship and support is at the heart of assisted living and memory care at Brookstone Terrace of Simpsonville.
