What makes a new place feel like home? For Carol, it is the people. In this short video from Brookstone Terrace of Chanticleer in Greenville, she talks about the kindness of the staff, the friendships she has made and the simple comfort of knowing someone is always there when she needs them.
People you can always count on
Carol starts with the team, and she keeps coming back to them. The people who work here are extremely helpful, she says, and you can always count on them if you need anything. Of everything she could pick, her favorite memory so far is simply the kindness of the people who work here, because, as she puts it, that is very important.
“I just can’t get over how nice the people are. They make you feel like it’s a home.”

She also has a sense of humor about it. It is the staff members who always make her smile, she says, because they have to put up with all of us. They stay pleasant, and she notices.
The best time of all: sitting down together
Ask Carol about her day and mealtimes come up quickly. The food is good, and breakfast, lunch and dinner are a good time. In her words, the best time of all is when everyone eats together and starts chit-chatting: what did you do today, did you get to that? It is easy conversation, and it is one of the ways neighbors become friends.

Walks, bird feeders and a love of art
Carol likes to get outside. Going for walks is one of her favorite activities, and it is nice not being in all day. She has even put out bird feeders so she can watch her birds. There is coloring and other activities from time to time, and when she heads back to her room she works on her artwork, which she happens to love. As she says, there is plenty to do if you want to.

From unsure to at home
This is Carol’s first time living in an assisted living community, and she is honest that she was leery of it at first. She did not know anybody and wondered why she needed to be there at all. Now she understands: you make great friends, and life is easier. She does not have to cook anymore, and the team goes out of their way to be nice.
“I think that means more to me, that I know I could always rely on the staff to be there.”
Carol, resident
If someone you love is hesitant about assisted living, Carol’s story is a good reminder that the first weeks are an adjustment, and that friendly people and a little support can turn a new address into home.
