Choosing memory care is never an easy decision. It is a decision made out of love. In this heartfelt interview from Brookstone Terrace of Chanticleer, a son shares his family’s journey, the moment he knew his dad would be okay, and what it means to visit simply as family again.
“That’s my dad”
Asked for a memory that captures who his father is, the son goes back to his wedding day. His dad, who served as his best man, was not one to say “I love you” easily. But in the back room before the ceremony, he told his son how proud he was of him and that he loved him. It is a moment he still treasures.
When home was no longer enough
For a long time, the family managed care at home with the help of a daytime caregiver, and the son began staying overnight with his parents, away from his own home and wife. As needs grew, the family knew they had to make a decision. While searching, they found Brookstone Terrace of Chanticleer, just two blocks from the family home.
Decided before they left the tour
The son says the team was professional, knowledgeable and easygoing, and happy to answer every question. Before he and his wife stepped out the door after their walkthrough, they had already decided this was the place for his dad. He even went home and told his own kids, half joking, that when the time comes, this is where he wants to be.
“I’m able to enjoy my life knowing that my dad is being taken care of.”

“He acts like he works here”
One of the things that makes the son smile most is seeing his father’s personality shine. His dad keeps an eye on things, looks out for his neighbors and has even tried to comfort another resident who was having a hard day. Staff regularly tell the son good things about his dad, and as he puts it, everybody loves him there.
Peace of mind for the whole family
Retired but busy with five grandkids, a family business and singing at churches and senior groups, the son no longer lies awake at night wondering how his dad is doing. He knows his father is getting three meals a day, help with personal care and around-the-clock support, which lets him visit simply as a son.
