A room full of who he is
Darrell’s room tells his story at a glance. His crosses and quilts hang on the wall, and his love of Michigan sports is easy to spot. He keeps a steady routine: early to bed, early to rise, with word searches, his radio and a stack of books close by. A TV lets him catch his favorite games, and he is quick to add that the temperature is just right.

A mechanic’s hands and an artist’s eye
Darrell worked as a mechanic, and he still loves keeping his hands busy. He paints, works with his fingers and builds models. In the video he proudly shows off a mountain landscape and a freehand painting of flowers, along with a drawing his granddaughter made for him and pictures of a NASCAR super modified. One of his favorite sayings is displayed for everyone to see: Love one another.
Friends, purpose and helping others
Darrell calls himself an easygoing kind of guy. He has a circle of good friends he can talk to, and he enjoys helping other residents during activities. Being trusted to lend a hand gives him a real sense of purpose.
“This is a good place to be. They trust me. These people will help you. Nobody should be afraid to come in here.”
