What does it really mean to stay active as we age? In this interview, Dylan shares how movement, music and community are helping residents at Brookstone Terrace of Greensboro stay energized, independent and engaged.
Any movement is good movement
Dylan cannot stress the importance of movement enough. When people sit a lot, as they often do at home, joints stiffen and other issues can follow. Any movement, preferably enjoyable movement, helps. His classes use resistance bands, light weights or no weights at all, and even simple arm raises support joint health and mobility.
Every level is welcome
In a single class, one resident might use a resistance band while another does leg lifts, some standing and some seated. Dylan scales every exercise so no one is asked to do something they cannot do.
The secret: community, competence and choice
Dylan follows a philosophy called self-determination theory. It has three parts: community (working out together), competence (knowing what you are doing at your level) and autonomy (having a choice). When classes started, he asked residents what they wanted to work on, from walking farther to standing up more easily.
“Do something. Whether you’re taking 10 steps or 100 steps, stay in that groove.”
