Arlene was born in October 1925 on a family farm in Iowa. During the Depression, her family moved to Chicago, where her father became a successful salesman who was eventually promoted, and the family settled in the Midwest.
Her mother’s advice
As a high school student, Arlene asked her mother about a lesson from class. Her mother gave her a piece of advice she has followed ever since: you are what you eat, and you are what you drink. Arlene has always been careful about what she eats, does not care for sweets and has always loved staying active. She would rather have been playing sports than sitting and reading.
